Info whilst staying at Pencarnan

Nestled on the western tip of Pembrokeshire, Pencarnan Farm has been in our family for over a century, with my father born here in 1915. Since welcoming our first campers in the 1950s, we’ve cherished hosting generations of visitors who return year after year.

We sincerely hope you have a wonderful holiday here and enjoy everything our corner of Pembrokeshire has to offer. Sian, Alan, family and all Pencarnan staff.

Please see reception and shop opening hours posted on the shop/reception door.

Out of hours there are a list of numbers posted on the door that you can call if you need assistance.

The loo and shower block is the stone building on the courtyard.

They are checked constantly throughout the day by male and female employees.

Please don’t hog the showers or allow young children to use them unsupervised.

If you cause an issue in there or see one that has been caused by someone else then please let us know.

We have seen it all, so please don’t worry about whatever it is you are reporting!

If we don’t know about an issue we can’t sort it.

The skips are situated in Rhosson field which is behind the big green barn/Courtyard/reception area.

These are for household rubbish and recycling only.

Please crush all cardboard boxes and plastic containers before you put them in the recycling skips.

We do not have the facility to accept broken tents, gazebos, garden furniture, broken plastic storage boxes, fridges, inflatables that are no more etc.

Please take these items home with you to dispose of.

The bins in the loo blocks and around the courtyard are for litter only. Please take your general rubbish to the skips/recycling area.

Camping/motor homes/campervans We ask that campers arrive before 8pm to keep the noise down for campers who are already pitched up. Please vacate your pitch by 12 noon on your departure day, remove all rubbish from your pitch before you leave and remove any stones you have collected and forgotten about, as these really mess up our mower blades. Fires and bbqs permissible on your pitch but they must be high up off the ground please as the heat from them will scorch the grass. We have resident badgers and foxes on the farmland and plenty of eagle eyed herring gulls. They love nothing better than a good old rummage through a food bag/box…usually under the cover of darkness. It is advisable to store food off the ground and inside your tent. We have plenty of field space for kite flying, ball games etc. If anything should find its way onto our neighbours farm please come to reception so we can arrange retrieval for you, as opposed to clambering over the hedges yourself.

Pencarnan family run and open in the high season only. We have a terrance on top of the catering units from where you can watch the sunset. This closes at 10pm every night. Please only consume food and drink in the courtyard area that has been bought from the coffee shop, bar or pizza hut, return all your empty bottles to the bar before you leave and use the pizza box bin for all used pizza boxes. The metal steps that lead up to the terrace have little drainage holes in them which are not dog claw friendly. We therefore do not recommend dogs are taken up to the terrace area.

All 60 statics on site are privately owned. Some are sub-let. We have a list of owners who sub-let in the shop.

Driving slowly on the track that leads to the farm and throughout the site keeps dust down, reduces noise, and makes the space feel safer and more relaxed for everyone. The track is in constant use by walkers, cyclists and equestrians as it is the only access road to the farm.

Basically, driving slowly helps prevent accidents and keeps the campsite a safe, peaceful place for everyone.

Pencarnan has a limited daily water supply. Due to us being at ‘the end of the line’ on the peninsular we have very low water pressure. To combat this we store water in tanks and pump it out to the loos, field taps and caravans. When demand for water is high in the St Davids area these tanks fill up very slowly.

Please do not wash sand off surfboards, wetsuits, kayaks, SUPs, beach toys and feet under the taps in the fields. Just leave them to dry and the sand will drop off them.

We have a tub for wetsuit washing by the loo block. Please remove your wetsuit before entering the showers and use this tub to rinse your wetsuit in.

Please be mindful when you use water here at Pencarnan.

We have a postal box on the courtyard where all post is dropped off and stored.

If you are arranging a delivery here to Pencarnan please make it clear on your order that the item must be delivered to Pencarnan reception area and not Pencarnan house.

All food deliveries must be arranged at a time when you are on site to accept them.

We also ask that you wait for the delivery van by the courtyard.

We cannot accept food deliveries for individuals at reception.

We do not have any public parking facilities on Pencarnan. Parking on Pencarnan land is reserved for guests staying here. If the campsite is quiet we are able to accommodate visitors to Pencarnan guests for a fee of £10 a day per car. Please enquire at reception if you intend to have visitors to your pitch whilst you are here.

The sea below Pencarnan has tides that come in and go out twice a day. This means the water level rises (high tide) and falls (low tide) roughly every 6 hours. There are many apps that give you tide times in the UK or you can get a tide table at reception.

Link to local tide times https://www.mhpa.co.uk/media/02okfe5k/tide-tables-sp25.pdf

Fires are permitted on the beach, please use ‘clean wood’ when you have a fire. Scrap wood can contain nails which will be left in the sand once the wood has burned away. This is not only unsightly but dangerous for the many people who walk barefoot on the sand. Disposable bbq’s, litter, broken beach toys, dog poo bags…please take them all away with you when you leave the beach. Contrary to popular belief, no bbq, litter or dog poo fairy resides on the beach just waiting for the opportunity to clean up after you. Please bag your rubbish etc and put it in a bin. Kayaks etc can be stored at the top of the beach on the sand or above the beach on the grass at your own risk. Keep an eye out for the high spring tides if you intend to leave your craft on the sand. The very high spring tide water driven by a north wind will reach the cliff edge. Boats etc left above the beach after October will be disposed of. Whitesands bay is generally a safe bay to play in. Ramsey sound currents are present beyond Fishermans point, (the headland you can see jutting out to your left when you stand above Porthsele beach..see map below) so we suggest leisure swimmers, kayakers and SUP users stay in water that can be seen from the beach. If you want more information about the tidal currents around the St Davids coastline then ask at reception. We have three St Davids RNLI crew members who will more than happy to chat to you.

Whitesands beach is a mile across the coast path to the north. This beach is lifeguarded from May to the end of October. Good for swimming, surfing, body boarding, kayaking and SUP.

St Justinians is under a mile along the coast path to the south. This is where the Ramsey Island boat trips depart from and home to the St davids lifeboat. Swimming is more enjoyable here at high tide….low tide, a lot of kelp and rocks are exposed.

The Pembrokeshire Coast Path was officially opened in 1970, becoming the first National Trail in Wales. Stretching for 186 miles (299 km), it follows the rugged, breathtaking coastline of Pembrokeshire from Amroth in the south to St Dogmaels in the north.

The path was originally created to give access to the many remote coves and inlets that were once used by fishermen, farmers, and even smugglers!

This is the path that you will see on the edge of Pencarnan land.

Please keep your dog on a lead around the campsite and courtyard area. We also advise you keep them on a lead around the coast path too.https://rnli.org/safety/choose-your-activity/coastal-walking/dog-walking

Poo can be deposited in a bag into the main general rubbish skips behind the big green barn.

A great sunset walk… Go through the fields towards St Johns Point to watch the sunset and the rapid flowing water in Ramsey Sound.  (see map below)

We are predominantly a family campsite, and we’re lucky that most of our guests value the same peaceful atmosphere that makes this place so special. To help everyone enjoy a good night’s sleep, we kindly ask that noise is kept to a minimum—especially after 10pm.

Thank you for being the kind of camper that makes Pencarnan feel like home for everyone.

You will notice we have many horses here at Pencarnan.

Please do not attempt to feed them ANYTHING, get on their backs or allow your dogs to chase them.

If you intend to walk through a gate on the farm that is closed, then please close it again after you have walked through.

The Bluetit Chill Swimmers C.I.C. took flight on Porthsele Beach in 2014. What was initially a small group of locals taking dips with me in the cold waters off the Welsh coast has since become an all inclusive international movement of over 100,000 people, united by a love of cold-water swimming and a spirit of inclusion, courage, and joy. The Bluetits now have flocks across the UK and around the world, offering connection, empowerment, and wellbeing through wild swimming. If you would like to join a Bluetit dip whilst you are here then please join the North Pembs Bluetits on Facebook and come along to any of the free dip meet ups you see posted on the group https://www.facebook.com/TheBluetits/ https://thebluetits.co Sian x
